InterTrauma surgeons have the following characteristics:

• Current with surgical practices
• Flexible time schedule
• Enjoy the challenge of health care at the fringes of the human experience
To become an InterTrauma surgeon, you must have the following prerequisites:
• Graduated from a US medical school
• Competed a general surgery residency in the US
• Be board certified in general surgery by the ABS
• Be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
• Have some overseas experience in broad-based general surgery, preferably austere, or developing world
• Be comfortable doing emergency surgery on any part of the body
• Military or humanitarian combat surgical experience strongly recommended
• Your case log will need to be submitted for review, and 8 letters of recommendation on letterhead must be submitted
directly to InterTrauma
• Your current and past chairman will be contacted directly by InterTrauma for a detailed telephone evaluation about
your professionalism, dependability and ethics
• A Health Practitioner Database Report must be submitted
Qualified surgeons that are approved as InterTrauma surgeons automatically become members of the InterTrauma Society.
This society is a group of surgeons which appreciate the broad-based practice of general surgery and have the constitution
to work in a civil war in Africa, or on a high-risk assignment in Antarctica.
Members of the InterTrauma Society are distinguished by donning attire blazoned with the InterTrauma coat of arms, and
are provided with an embroidered blazer after their first assignment. The InterTrauma Society has an annual gala dinner in
New York City at the University Club.
